Wimbledon 2019 Men’s Singles

The 2019 Wimbledon Championships begin on Monday 1st July and as usual, there has been great anticipation leading up to the event.  This is arguably the most prestigious of the four Grand Slams and the players are fans are always excited to attend.

The men’ singles is going to be very interesting this year.  The current world number one, Novak Djokovic will be on hand to defend his title.

The Defending Champion

Djokovic should have little problem in progressing through the first week of the tournament.  It would be a massive shock if the Serbian did not reach the quarter-final.  That’s where he is set to face his first real test, most likely against Stefanos Tsitsipas or Daniil Medvedev.

Due to the seeding system, both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer are in the other half of the draw and that plays nicely into Djokovic’s hands.  He will be more than happy to see his two great rivals battle each other in the semi-final if they both make it and Djokovic must be considered the favourite to win the men’s singles title.

You can back Djokovic at 11/8 with Ladbrokes.

Federer and Nadal

As highlighted above, Federer and Nadal are in the same half of the draw, which means only one of them can reach the final.

Federer is an eight-time Wimbledon champion and as long as he keeps turning up to play in the tournament, he will remain one of the favourites, regardless of age.  Of the seeded players in his quarter of the draw, Borna Coric, Kei Nishikori, and Lucas Pouille present the biggest challenge and the Swiss should have enough to defeat whichever player he meets.

Federer should make at least the semi-final and is 3/1 with William Hill to win the competition.

Nadal does not have it so easy in his quarter of the draw.  The French Open champion could meet Nick Kyrgios in the second round, who is very temperamental but a great player on his day.  Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is a possible third round opponent and the Spaniard could face a tough test against Marin Cilic in the round of 16.

Nadal is on offer at 6/1 with Betfair to win the 2019 Wimbledon men’s singles but it looks a big ask.

Other Contenders

Stefanos Tsitsipas is enjoying a great season and has two ATP Tour titles to his name this year having reached four finals.  The Greek does not have a great record on grass but could be about to change that this year and is 18/1 with Ladbrokes to win the tournament.

Other names to look out for in the draw include Alexander Zverev, who is looking to reach his first Grand Slam semi-final, at 40/1 with Betfair and 23-year old Daniil Medvedev, who reached the semi-final at Queens this year, priced at 50/1 with William Hill.
